Orangeburg Grapples with Severe Flooding, Schools Close and Roads Wash Away
Residents urged to stay home as floodwaters continue to rise
Orangeburg, South Carolina is experiencing severe flooding as a result of heavy rainfall over the past few days. Schools have been closed and roads have been washed away, making travel dangerous.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Orangeburg County until 8 p.m. tonight. Residents are urged to stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
The flooding has already caused significant damage to homes and businesses. Several roads have been closed, including parts of Interstate 26. The South Carolina Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid the area if possible.
The Orangeburg County Emergency Management Division is urging residents to take the following precautions:
- Stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
- If you must travel, be aware of your surroundings and avoid flooded areas.
- Do not drive through flooded areas. Even a few inches of water can cause your car to stall.
- If you see power lines down, stay away from them and call 911.
- Be aware of the risk of drowning. If you are caught in floodwaters, try to stay afloat and call for help.
Flooding expected to continue
The flooding is expected to continue as more rain is forecast for the area. The National Weather Service is urging residents to monitor the situation closely and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Orangeburg County Fairgrounds for residents who have been displaced by the flooding.
