USC Survives Idaho State's Upset Bid
Trojans Win 24-17 in Season Opener
USC's offense struggled but defense came up with big plays
USC survived a scare from Idaho State on Saturday night, winning 24-17 in their season opener. The Trojans' offense struggled for much of the game, but their defense came up with big plays when they needed them most.
USC took an early lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Travis Dye. However, Idaho State answered back with a 27-yard field goal by kicker David Allsop. The Trojans extended their lead to 10-3 on a 33-yard field goal by kicker Parker Lewis, but the Bengals came right back with a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Vander Waal to wide receiver Rodrick Tialavea.
The Trojans took the lead for good on a 2-yard touchdown run by Dye in the third quarter. USC's defense then forced a three-and-out, and the Trojans took advantage of the short field with a 27-yard field goal by Lewis. Idaho State cut the lead to 24-17 on a 25-yard field goal by Allsop, but the Trojans' defense held on for the win.
USC's offense struggled to get going for much of the game. The Trojans finished with just 282 total yards, including 128 rushing yards. Quarterback Caleb Williams completed just 19 of 32 passes for 154 yards and one interception. Dye was the leading rusher for the Trojans with 11 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
The Trojans' defense came up with big plays when they needed them most. USC forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and one fumble recovery. Linebacker Shane Lee had a team-high 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack. Safety Calen Bullock had two interceptions, including one that he returned for a touchdown.
The win was a good start to the season for USC. The Trojans will now prepare for their next game against Stanford on Saturday, September 10.
