Rising Phoenix: Dorn, Simpkins Impress Late in Opener at No. 9 North Carolina
Dorn, Simpkins Lead Tar Heels' Comeback Attempt
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- No. 9 North Carolina dropped its season opener to LSU, 74-64, on November 18th but not without some impressive late-game performances from freshmen Will Dorn and Tyler "TJ" Simpkins.Dorn, a 6'7" forward, made his first career start and played 27 minutes, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. He also added 2 assists, 3 steals, and a block.
Simpkins, a 6'4" guard, played 20 minutes off the bench and scored 7 points on 3-of-6 shooting. He also had 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
Both players helped the Tar Heels make a late run in the game, cutting the LSU lead to 68-64 with just over two minutes remaining. But the Tigers hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Dorn's Impact
Dorn's performance was particularly impressive considering it was his first career start. He showed a good all-around game, contributing in a variety of ways. His rebounding was especially impressive, as he pulled down 7 rebounds in just 27 minutes of play.
Dorn's versatility will be a valuable asset for the Tar Heels this season. He can play both inside and outside, and he is a good passer and defender.
Simpkins' Potential
Simpkins also showed some impressive flashes in his debut. He is a good shooter and passer, and he has the potential to be a very good defender. He needs to improve his ball-handling and decision-making, but he has the talent to be an impact player for the Tar Heels.
With Dorn and Simpkins in the fold, the Tar Heels have two young players who could help them bounce back from last season's disappointing finish.
