The George Mason Patriots kicked off their 2023 season with a convincing 75-58 victory over the NC Central Eagles on Monday night at Eagle Bank Arena. After a back-and-forth first half, the Patriots pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 43-28.

Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Patriots

The Patriots were led by a balanced scoring attack, with four players finishing in double figures. Josh Oduro led the way with 15 points, followed by Davonte Gaines with 14, Devin Dinkins with 12, and Jamal Hartwell II with 11. The Patriots shot 47.4% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range.

Defense Shines in Second Half

The Patriots' defense was impressive in the second half, holding the Eagles to just 28 points. NC Central shot just 34.4% from the field and 20.0% from three-point range in the second half. The Patriots also forced 10 turnovers in the second half.

Patriot Bench Provides Spark

The Patriots' bench played a key role in the victory, outscoring the Eagles' bench 28-12. Gaines and Hartwell II provided a spark off the bench, combining for 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The Patriots will look to build on their season-opening win when they host the Richmond Spiders on Friday, November 11th. The Spiders are coming off a 74-62 win over the Delaware Blue Hens in their season opener.
