Jets sign former Matilda to bolster A-League Women's squad
Former Westfield Matilda Gema Simon has been unveiled as Newcastle Jets' latest signing ahead of the 2022/23 A-League Women season. The experienced shot-stopper joins the Jets from Western Sydney Wanderers, where she made 12 appearances in the inaugural A-League Women season.
Capped nine times by her country, Simon has a wealth of experience at the highest level, having previously played for Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC. She will add depth to the Jets' goalkeeping stocks, providing competition for incumbent number one Claire Coelho.
Jets coach Ash Wilson said he was delighted to secure the services of a player of Simon's caliber.
"Gema is a fantastic shot-stopper with great experience," Wilson said. "She will be a valuable addition to our squad, and we're looking forward to seeing what she can bring to the team." Simon said she was excited to join the Jets and was looking forward to the new challenge.
"I'm really excited to be joining the Jets," Simon said. "It's a great club with a great history, and I'm looking forward to working with Ash and the rest of the staff and players."
The Jets will open their A-League Women season against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday, December 3, at Commbank Stadium.
