Italy braced for 24-hour local public transport strike
Strike to affect buses, trams and metro services in major cities
Italy is braced for a 24-hour strike by local public transport workers on Wednesday, which is expected to cause major disruption to bus, tram and metro services in major cities across the country.
The strike has been called by the Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl and Uiltrasporti unions in protest at the government's plans to reform the public transport sector.
The unions are calling for a number of changes to the government's plans, including increased funding for public transport, better working conditions for transport workers, and a more sustainable transport system.
Strike to affect major cities
The strike is expected to affect major cities across Italy, including Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Florence.
In Rome, all bus, tram and metro services will be suspended for 24 hours from 8am on Wednesday.
In Milan, the strike will affect all metro, tram and bus services from 8.30am to 12.30pm and from 3pm to 7pm.
In Naples, the strike will affect all metro, tram and bus services from 9am to 1pm and from 3pm to 7pm.
Alternative transport options
Passengers are advised to make alternative transport arrangements for Wednesday.
Some cities are laying on extra buses and trains to help cope with the disruption.
For example, in Rome, extra buses will be running on some routes, and in Milan, extra trains will be running on the suburban railway network.
