Exclusive: Elliotte Friedman Says Los Angeles Kings CJCL Deal 99% Done
Breaking: 6-Year, $110 Million Extension
Elliotte Friedman announced today on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada that Drew Doughty and the L.A. Kings have agreed in principle to a new six-year, $110 million contract extension, with only some minor details left to resolve. The deal is expected to be officially announced on July 1 when the NHL’s free agency period opens. If Doughty signs the extension, he will forgo his current 11-team no-trade clause in exchange for a full no-movement clause, meaning he would retain the ability to block any trade.
Doughty’s Commitment to Los Angeles
The 32-year-old defenseman has spent his entire 14-year NHL career with the Kings, and he is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in the league. A two-time Stanley Cup champion and Norris Trophy winner, Doughty has been a key part of the Kings’ success over the past decade. “This is where I wanted to be,” Doughty said in a recent interview. “L.A. has been nothing but great to me, and I can’t see myself playing anywhere else.”
Kings’ Long-Term Plans
The Kings have been in a rebuilding mode for the past few seasons, but they are hoping that Doughty’s extension will be a sign that they are ready to compete for a playoff spot again soon. “We’re very excited to have Drew back,” said Kings general manager Rob Blake. “He’s a great player and a great leader, and we think he can help us get back to the top.”
Doughty’s Future in Los Angeles
Doughty’s new contract will keep him in Los Angeles until he is 38 years old. He is expected to continue to be a key part of the Kings’ defense for the next several seasons. “I’m excited for the future,” Doughty said. “I think we have a great team, and I think we can make a run for the playoffs next year.”
