Eli Iserbyt slams beer thrower in Koppenbergcross: "It's the lowest and worst thing that can happen at a race"
Eli Iserbyt has launched a scathing attack on the beer thrower incident at Koppenbergcross, calling it the "lowest and worst thing that can happen at a race".
The Belgian rider was one of several riders targeted by beer throwers during the race on Sunday, and he was left fuming after the incident.
Iserbyt said the actions of the beer throwers were "disrespectful" and "dangerous", and he called on the sport's governing body, the UCI, to take action to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
"It's the lowest and worst thing that can happen at a race," Iserbyt said. "It's disrespectful to the riders, the fans, and the sport itself.
Iserbyt added: "The UCI needs to do something to stop this from happening again. They need to make sure that the fans are safe and that the riders are able to race without fear of being attacked."
The UCI has yet to comment on the incident, but it is likely to issue a statement in the coming days.
In the meantime, Iserbyt's comments have been met with support from other riders and fans.
Tom Pidcock, who finished second in the race, said: "I agree with Eli. It's completely unacceptable behavior. The UCI needs to take action to stop it."
And Mathieu van der Poel, who won the race, said: "It's a shame that this kind of thing is happening in our sport. It's dangerous and it's disrespectful. The UCI needs to do something to stop it."
