Australia vs Pakistan, first ODI: Captain Cummins leads hosts to nervy win
Cummins, Starc and Richardson shared 8 wickets as Australia held their nerves to beat Pakistan by 9 wickets in the first ODI at the Gabba.
The hosts chased down a modest 210 with 19 balls to spare after David Warner (67) and Travis Head (89) put on a 135-run partnership for the second wicket.
Australia needed to bounce back following their Test series defeat to Pakistan, and captain Cummins ensured a positive start to the one-dayers with an impressive display of fast bowling. He took 3-33 from seven overs, while Mitchell Starc (2-43) and Kane Richardson (3-25) also bowled well.
Pakistan's innings was built around Babar Azam's 57 and Imam-ul-Haq's 50, but they lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 209 in 49.4 overs. Australia made a solid start to their reply, with Warner and Head putting on a century partnership for the second wicket. Head was eventually dismissed for 89, but Warner went on to make 67 before he was caught by substitute fielder Khushdil Shah off the bowling of Mohammad Wasim.
Steven Smith (22*) and Marnus Labuschagne (11*) saw Australia home with relative ease to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
